Observations - Is Faith Really Blind?

IS FAITH REALLY BLIND?
FROM MILTON JONES BOOK CHRIST-NO MORE, NO LESS

The message of God is that Christianity is not just another philosophy without certainty. It is a religion based on revelation. God himself is manifested in flesh. The message is revealed in the Word. And the message is delivered by the Spirit.

Francis Schaeffer, the American theologist who lived in Switzerland, used a mountain climbing analogy to illustrate the character of Christian truth. A climber in the Alps upon reaching a pinnacle of the mountain found himself in a snowstorm. He knew that he soon had either to descend the mountain or freeze to death. He also knew there was a safe way down and another way over a cliff that would lead to certain death. But he didnt know the way.

What could the climber do? He could just run and take a blind leap of faith. He would be off the pinnacle and below the storm. But he might be dead.

Suppose, however, that he heard a voice. The voice came from someone below him. It told him which way to jump. If he jumped toward the voice, he was told, it would be only a small leap and safety would await him.

Would he leap? Maybe. But wouldnt he first ask, Who are you? Do you know this mountain? Was the person directing him experienced? Had he been there before? Did he really know where he was? Was this a friend or an enemy telling him what to do?

If he jumped, certainly it would be a leap of faith However, it would not be a blind leap of faith. No, it would be a guided leap of faith.

As Christians we are asked by God to make a leap of faith. But this leap is anything but blind. It is a guided leap of faith We have the word of God to guide us. And we have Jesus who has been here before and truly knows where we are. Most importantly, our advice is coming from a friend who lovers us.

The Foundation and the Blue Hens for Christ Campus Ministry and its Campus Minister, Matt Wilson, invite college students to come, relax, enjoy a meal, share common interests, take time to listen to the voice, ask the questions that trouble you, and let the voice lead you to a life that will never end. Francis Schaeffer said, He is there. And He is not silent.
